West Coast Swing is huge in the US and is the fastest growing partner dance in the UK. WCS is the perfect progression from Jive, not only for the more experienced dancer wishing to take their dancing to a higher level, but also for the novice dancer interested in learning some smooth, sexy and sassy moves, along with vital technique which can be applied to a range of couples dances.

Never seen West Coast Swing? Don't know what it is?
WCS is a smooth, stylish and creative social partner dance derived from Lindy Hop and evolved into a modern dance suitable for a wide range of music including R&B, swing, blues etc. It is characterised by a distinctive elastic look that results from its basic extension-compression technique of partner connection, and is danced primarily in a slotted area on the dance floor. The dance allows for both partners to improvise steps while dancing together.

6 Week Courses

If you have always wanted to learn this stylish social dance but haven’t been able to travel to London or further…come along and help make this a success so that we can all enjoy WCS in our local area.

The Beginner’s Course will be an ideal opportunity for anyone who wants to learn WCS from scratch, but is also aimed at anyone who wants to brush up on their basics. The class will take you through the five fundamental patterns (including simple variations) from which all the other moves originate. If you’ve done a little bit before, this is a perfect opportunity to work on the “feel” of the dance thereby leaving you able to concentrate even more on connection with your partner and enjoying the music.

We strongly advise you to attend more than once a week in order to consolidate the basics and be able to freestyle with confidence.

We will only be running the courses at St Ives with a minimum of 12 people, otherwise we shall use the time and space for private lessons.

The courses are £36 at St Ives and is to be paid on the first night. Please book your place on the course by email or call us. You do not need to book with a partner - we will ensure that the numbers of leaders and followers are even. Brand new WCS dancers will not be allowed to join the class until the next course starts so that we can work with the same group of people and make the course progressive. Even if you've done the course before, we will adapt each course to the group so everyone will be able to work within their own level of experience and will receive almost private tuition as the groups are small.

*The course at Bramshaw is £35 for 6 weeks or £8 on the door.*

See below for timetables...

 Bramshaw Class night timetable
7:30pm - Doors open, registration and a chance to get a drink and have a chat.
8:00 - 9:00 - Beginner's course - WCS fundamentals.
9:00 - 9:15 - Freestyle
9:15 - 10:00 -  Improvers class expanding on the fundamentals, teaching variations and patterns.

10:00 - 11:00pm - Freestyle to fantastic music. This is where you really develop your ability to dance.

Both classes will provide styling tips and focus on the underlying principles of partner dancing e.g. how to lead and follow effectively, posture and musicality.

St Ives, Totton & Queens Park Class nights' timetable
There will be one class for one and a quarter hours followed by half an hour's practise. These courses will be smaller, more intimate groups and there will be plenty of personal tuition.

What to wear:
Wear whatever you feel comfortable in. It is advisable to wear shoes with a smooth sole to enable you to turn and spin with less effort making it easier on your knees & ankles. Some like a heel, others prefer a flat sole. A heel helps place the weight forward. When you are learning at first, you tend to use more energy and therefore perspire more, so bring a small towel and deodorant. For men...it is a good idea to bring a second shirt.

Don't worry if you have not got a partner:
Classes are based on a rotational system, so you will rotate during the class and get to meet and dance with everyone.
